ACADEMICS

Sac High offers the best of two worlds - the support and personalization of a small school combined with the advantages of a large school. Organized into four theme-based small schools, Sac High is focused on preparing every student for college and the world beyond. School culture as well as academic and behavior expectations are consistent across the small schools and students have access to campus-wide resources including tutoring, leadership and enrichment opportunities, athletics, arts, and student activities.

Curriculum

Each small school at Sac High offers a rigorous liberal arts curriculum that provides a full range of college preparatory courses, including Advanced Placement. The program of study is designed to fulfill all state requirements for accreditation and meets the "A-G" requirements for admission into the University of California, California State University and other public and private colleges. Each small school also offers a sequence of electives which emphasize the school theme.

Academic Support

Every student at Sac High has an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) that guides their academic experience. As part of the ILP, academic Sac High offers a range of supports to ensure student success. Examples include:

  • English Language Development (ELD)
  • Special Education
  • After School Program
  • Literacy Program
  • Math Program
  • Summer School
  • Tutoring
  • SAT/ACT Prep Courses
  • CAHSEE Prep Courses

Tutoring: Supplemental Education Services (SES/tutoring) will be offered again during the 2010-2011 school year. The tutoring is funded through Title I as a requirement of Sac High's Program Improvement (PI) Year 3 status (see below for more information on PI). This tutoring is provided at no cost to families who are eligible for free/reduced lunch.

During 2009-2010, 59 of the approximately 700 eligible students (eligibility is determined by eligibility for free and reduced lunch) participated in Supplemental Education Services (SES/tutoring). The school was able to utilize the full amount allocated for these services (excepting students that did not complete services) which is 20% of regular Title I funds.

In 2010-11, approximately 700 students will be eligible to receive SES. Eligible families will receive a letter offering these tutoring services in the fall. The enrollment period will last 3 weeks. If more students request services than funding available, students will be ranked by grade point average and the lowest performing students will be offered services first. If spaces are available due to lack of enrollment or students dropping out of the program, an additional enrollment window will be opened and parents will again be notified.

Tutoring takes place outside of regular school hours at locations determined by parent and tutoring provider.  Many tutors meet at public libraries, community centers, in-home (with an adult present), or at the school site.  Tutors are also available to work with students with disabilities or who are English learners.
